Ethical Affairs Subcommittee

I’m Amy, the new JCR Ethical Affairs Officer and I’m looking for a environmental and ethical affairs subcommittee. If you’re passionate about saving the environment and helping others, or would just like to help organise charity events in college drop me a quick email at arh91@cam.ac.uk. Subcommittee roles would be fairly low-commitment but really fun and a great way to help make a difference in college!

JCR Committee Nominations **NOW OPEN*** – sign up before Wednesday

JCR Committee nominations are now open until Friday at midday – to make time for a drop-in session we’ll be hosting to help explain the roles a bit better later this week. Watch your Hermes for more details about this!

We haven’t got many sign-ups yet, so it would be good to see some more names down on the list soon! Go to this page of our website to see descriptions of each role.
If you’d like more info about any of the roles, please do feel free to contact the incumbent officer (see their contact details here). All students are welcome and invited to apply for any of these positions – freshers included – we often find freshers can contribute most to committee work.
Some of the roles are pretty low commitment – so it won’t take up too much of your time, but you can make College life better in a whole range of ways. There are loads of perks to being on the committee too, which I’m sure the incumbent officer would be happy to explain to you. I’d invite all students to look over the roles – they need to be filled, and can provide you with a great experience and very rewarding results.

Treasurer

Workload: Very little – occasional duties. Usually ~2.5 hrs/week

Overview:

The role of Treasurer is mainly administrative. The Treasurer records all income/expenditure, pays all invoices and reimburses other JCR committee members. The Treasurer organises all monetary matters relating to ents and freshers’ week. The Treasurer keeps other committee members up to date on how much money the JCR has available to spend, and the Treasurer must approve all expenditure.

As a member of the JCR committee the Treasurer must also attend weekly meeting, help with the set up and delivery of ents and help run freshers’ week events. As such, despite being mainly an administrative role, the Treasurer can potentially influence all other areas of JCR decision making.

What can this role achieve?

An important role with a very manageable workload. Looks good on the CV – recruiters love all things JCR related. Through participation in weekly meetings can influence all areas of JCR decision making.

Welfare Officer

Workload: Reasonable – a few tasks each week. Usually ~3 hrs/week

Overview:

First of all, ensure the general welfare of students of the College. Arrange regular welfare events, especially around Week 5, and weekly drop in sessions. Also, supply sexual health supplies via the JCR website link to the welfare pidgeon hole on a regular basis, collecting supplies from CUSU. One also has to attend CUSU General and Sexual Health Training Sessions.

What can this role achieve?

Having Freshers recognise you and feel confident to come and speak to you wherever you are, and just seeing everyone enjoying the welfare events means the world. It is just lovely to see others happy and working with a brilliant subcommittee makes the role!

Yearbook Officer

Workload: Not too bad – but some busy patches. Usually ~2 hrs/week

Overview:

Your role is to be in charge of bringing back a Yearbook to St. John’s. The college hasn’t had a yearbook for about a decade now and you will a large degree of freedom to create a masterpiece to help students remember their time here at John’s. As part of the role you will need to form a sub-committee to assist you, which may include creative designers, writers, reps or more. You will meet with senior members of college staff, so that they can support you in advertising and distributing the finished product. Alongside your role as Yearbook Officer you will also be a general member of the JCR helping out at ents and freshers week, and attending weekly meetings where you can get your views across to try and shape college life for all the students of college.
