Teach in Nepal

Volunteer to teach in Nepal with Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal

How would you like to spend your summer living, teaching, traveling and just generally experiencing Nepal?

Every year Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal sends 16 volunteers, split between two schools and time slots to two schools, one in Kathmandu the other in rural countryside, run by the charitable, incredibly progressive foundation Hindu Vidya Peeth.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, though the inhabitants will often tell you it has boundless wealth in happiness and natural beauty and you’ll soon come to agree with them, and help is desperately needed to inject some sense and energy into their education system.

Teaching is in English and extremely flexible, not just English lessons but Maths, Science, History, Geography and anything else you can think of that would entertain and interest the kids as well.

Living with the kids, teaching and playing with them every day, travelling through the beautiful, sometimes mystifying, always fascinating country or just chatting with some of the friendliest people on earth is an incredible experience and we welcome any and everyone to apply.

If you’d like to learn more we’ll be running two short presentations of our own experiences there on Wednesday the 24th at 8pm and Saturday the 27th (of October) both in Trinity Hall’s Crescent Room. Please come along and ask us any questions, have a look at the schools, the homes and most importantly the kids. Also check out our website https://sites.google.com/site/cambridgevolunteersinnepal/

We’ll announce dates for applications and interviews soon, until then Namaste!

Mindfulness Workshop

*What: Free Mindfulness Workshop with Young Buddhist Monks and Nuns*

Where: Chetwynd Room, King’s College, Cambridge CB2 1ST

When: 17 October 2012, 14:00 to 20:00

Why: In today’s busy world, we all experience the stress, pressures, and expectations of daily life – overconsumption, overwork, uncertainty and anxiety about the future. How can we touch peace and freedom in the midst of it all?

Young monks and nuns from Plum Village, students of world renowned Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, are coming to the UK in October 2012 to give training in mindfulness for young people.

On October 17th they will offer a free workshop from 2-8pm in the Chetwynd Room in King’s College. This mindfulness workshop offers us time and space to come together to disengage from all the busyness and begin to reclaim our freedom.

The monks and nuns from Plum Village will guide you through impressively simple and effective practices including sitting meditation, walking meditation, deep relaxation and eating meditation.

With the tools of mindfulness practice, we will learn how to stop and listen more deeply to ourselves and others, to explore what holds us back and what can make us more free.

If you know a thing or two about mindfulness, great. If you’re new to the
practice, even better. Just go to wkupuk.org to register.

feature prominently in promotional materials and on our website. This is a
great opportunity to gain exposure both at a regional and national level,
and to build a modeling career. The winner will receive a make-over,
photo-shoot, and portfolio copies of each of the images we use in our
promotional packs.

To enter, please FILL OUT THE ATTACHED FORM, and attach a RECENT HEADSHOT,

The photographs will be placed on our Facebook site for a popular ‘like’
vote to sit alongside the judges’ vote. 40 entrants will be chosen for a
live casting call and will be notified by email which will give further
instructions about the casting event. The winner will be announced at a
live event in November and all selected entrants will be considered as

Playing in Musical Theatre Bands

PLAYING IN PIT BANDS AND CABARET

Did you play an instrument and then come to University and find you didnt have time to keep playing? Musical pit bands could be for you – playing in pit bands is a low commitment way to keep playing as well as an opportunity to have fun and meet new people.

If you are interested, send me (Oli) and email at or248@cam.ac.uk to get put on the Cambridge Musical Theatre Society (CUMTS) pit band list. Once on the list, you will get information about playing in musicals, operas and other Cambridge shows as well as opportunities to play in CUMTS bar nights and the CUMTS annual Gala night.

If you are interested in getting involved straight away, I am currently looking for a band to play in the Week 5 CUMTS ADC show, Cabaret. Read on for more info…

The show runsfrom Tues 6th – Sat 10th Novemeber with a Thursday AND Saturday matinee. The commitment beyond the show week will be several hours of rehearsal timeas well as a sitz probe, tech and dress which will all be from the weekend before the show goes up. I am in need of players to fill the following parts:

– Pianist/ Repetiteurs * – Drummer – 1 Cello – 1 Viola – 2 Violin I – 1 Violin II – 1 French Horn – 2 Trombones – Reed I (Piccolo, Flute, Clarinet, Alto/Sop Sax) – Reed 2 (Clarinet, Sop/Alto Sax) – Reed 3 (Clarinet, Tenor Sax) also oboe and horn but not necessary – Reed 4 (Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bari Sax) and also bassoon but again not necessary

With regards to the reed parts, ideally I would like to find people who
play all the instruments for the individual parts but if you can only say
play the clarinet and sax still get in touch.

* I am looking to create a bank of repetiteurs for the rehearsal process
but I will also need a pianist to play the piano part in the show – ideally
I would like to have a Chief Repetiteur to fulfil this role but I can be
flexible.

If you are interested in playing or have any questions regarding Cabaret or
the musicians list, feel free to send me an email on or248@cam.ac.uk.

Best
