National Trust Society Christmas Social and Volunteer Registration

National Trust Society Christmas Social and Volunteer Registration

Everyone is welcome to come and join us 6-8pm on Friday 30th November in Magdalene Cripps Court Meeting Room 5 for mulled wine, mince pies and festive cheer!

We will have members of the National Trust from Anglesey Abbey and Wicken Fen on hand so you can discuss and organise volunteering opportunities with them for next term. These volunteer opportunities vary widely – from researching in the comfort of your own home, to coming along to one of the sites to get your hands dirty! There’s something for everyone!

There will also be a chance to find out more about the HLF funded Domestic Wing project at Anglesey Abbey: this project will aim to re-open the engine rooms of the historic house and re-create the atmosphere and activities that took place in the 10 spaces of the domestic wing during Lord Fairhaven’s time. The NT wants to involve the local community, including students, in this project and there are a number of exciting new volunteer roles available. Come along and speak to a member of the house team at the social to find out more.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Wolfson Howler

Wolfson Howler with Ben Target

The very last Wolfson Howler of 2012 will be descending on the Wolfson College bar on Monday, November 26th. Come see off Michaelmas Term with some of the best comedy from Cambridge and beyond. We are very excited to announce a headline set from the hugely gifted, multi-talented writer-performer BEN TARGET.

In 2012, Ben received an Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nomination for his debut solo show, ‘Discover Ben Target’ at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It was a festival highlight and media favourite with sell-out shows and consistently positive reviews. Ben performed on BBC3’s Comedy Marathon and appeared on BBC3’s Live At The Electric. He was selected for the UK tour, ‘Comedy’s New Wave’ alongside Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Jonny Sweet and Nick Mohammed. Ben was also invited to represent the UK at the Eindhoven Comedy Festival in The Netherlands with Zoe Lyons.

In 2011, Ben won the prestigious UK stand up competition, Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year. He co-created an online series for BBC3. Ben co-founded PLEB Talks, the sell-out comedy lecture series – embarking on a UK festival tour.

Frequently embraced by critics as one to watch, Ben is crafting his distinct, engaging and wildly creative style.

All topped off with a showcase of the best in Cambridge student comedy, presided over by the brilliant Nish Kumar.

Come join us in Wolfson’s friendly student-run bar and laugh your way out of Michaelmas. Doors open at 8pm for an 8.30 start, tickets just £5 on the door. Capacity is strictly limited so we recommend getting down nice and early to guarantee a seat.

Nine Billion Mouths to Feed

THE TRIPLE HELIX CAMBRIDGE SCIENCE EVENT NINE BILLION MOUTHS TO FEED:SHOULD WE TURBOCHARGE CROP PRODUCTIVITY TO FEED THE WOTHE TRIPLE HELIX CAMBRIDGE SCIENCE EVENT
NINE BILLION MOUTHS TO FEED:SHOULD WE TURBOCHARGE CROP PRODUCTIVITY TO FEED THE WORLD?

The Triple Helix Cambridge would like to invite you for the next exciting and FREE event this term titled ‘Nine Billion Mouths to Feed: Should we turbocharge crop productivity to feed the world?’ with speaker Professor Howard Griffiths from the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge.

Professor Griffiths discusses the food security debate. The world’s population is expected to increase to 9 billion over the upcoming 50 years; can we rely on traditional plant breeding to deliver in the face of intensifying climatic extremes? The solution might lie in engineering plants to enhance photosynthetic rates and therefore crop production, but what are the technical and social challenges of such a scheme? The presentation outlines the details of proposed bio engineering projects – the discussion allows you to debate their implications for the world at large.

Time: Friday 23rd November 2012, 6:00-7:00pm
Place: McCrum Lecture Theatre, Bene’t Street (Behind the Eagle Pub)
