30th October 2012

Hi all :)

So it’s been a while since my last update… Here’s what I’ve been up to! If there’s anything you want to see accomplished in College by the JCR Committee on your behalf, drop me an email on fo236 and let me know.

We had a JCR Open Meeting on the 16th and we have another one of those coming up in the next few weeks, when we’ll be talking about JCR Elections, the charity the JCR supports with its events and some other important issues. Keep your eye out for a date!

Jon and I both attended an Environmental Committee meeting on the 17th – we’ve made some great progress particularly on the College’s recycling policies and we’re currently getting sorted for Green Day. We’ll be focusing on the environment across the College and working to raise awareness about using energy sensibly and so on.

I’ve also had meetings with the Senior Tutor and Domestic Bursar on the 17th and 19th, making sure that things continue to run smoothly as always! We have a couple of exciting announcements coming up from these meetings, which I’ll release as soon as I can…

As usual I’ve been going to CUSU Council and Presidents & External meetings. We’ve renewed all but one of the motions which were lapsing policy – this means they had been CUSU policy for 3 years and needed to be reviewed. You can email CUSU or check out their website if you’d like any more info on these policies. 4

Last week I had a Senior and Junior Members committee meeting on the 25th, which is a forum for the JCR and SBR to speak with the Master and other Fellows in particular about academic issues for students in College. I also met with the panel of Tutors, to discuss one of those exciting things I’ll be announcing soon…! :)  There was also a Publications and Public Relations Committee meeting on the 24th.

Coming up this week I’ve also got a Health & Safety Committee meeting, a meeting with the Development Office about some refurbishment work happening in College, a College Council meeting with the College’s most senior Fellows, and a meeting with the Domestic Bursar.

Do let me know if you’ve got any questions, concerns, worries, feedback or anything else you think the JCR could do with hearing! :)

Thanks,

Flick x

Nepal Teaching Experience

Volunteer to teach in Nepal with Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal – Applications in NOW

How would you like to spend your summer living, teaching, traveling and just generally experiencing Nepal?

Apply now on our website, https://sites.google.com/site/cambridgevolunteersinnepal/ Applications MUST be in by THIS SATURDAY at midnight!

Every year Cambridge Volunteers in Nepal sends 16 volunteers, split between two schools and time slots to two schools, one in Kathmandu the other in rural countryside, run by the charitable, incredibly progressive foundation Hindu Vidya Peeth. This is a country desperately in need of help with their education systems, and incredibly thankful for any assistance it receives

Living with the kids, teaching and playing with them every day, travelling through the beautiful, sometimes mystifying, always fascinating country or just chatting with some of the friendliest people on earth is an incredible experience and we welcome any and everyone to apply.

Applications are in for this Saturday, you can apply online on our website https://sites.google.com/site/cambridgevolunteersinnepal/ where you can also find loads of information about the scheme. Then hopefully in the next few weeks we’ll be calling you for interview, just 10-15 minutes to find out why you want to go to Nepal and what kind of teacher you might be. Don’t worry, we don’t judge on experience, but mainly on enthusiasm for the project, the kids and the country.
